This weeks REFUGE WATERFOWL COUNT found a large variety of birds, and many of these species can be easily viewed from the observation area of Heron Flats (on 148 south of the Visitor's Center). Counted were: 3270 White-fronted Geese, 1460 Snow Geese, 7 Ross's Geese, 2 Cackling Geese, 4310 Canada Geese, 371 Gadwall, 7 Wigeon, 2 Black Duck, 6594 Mallard, 23 Shoveler, 14 Pintail, 35 Green-winged Teal, 4 Canvasback, 667 Ring-necked Duck, 31 Scaup, 11 Bufflehead, 27 Goldeneye, 11 Hooded Merganser, 120 Common Merganser, 23 Ruddy Duck, 19 Pie-billed Grebe, 36 Pelican, 7 Great Blue Heron, 12 Coots, 3 Killdeer, and 6 Bald Eagle, for a total of over 17,000 waterfowl counted from 25 surveyed sites. Also, early this week Crab Orchard Refuge was listed as the current NUMBER ONE BIRDING HOTSPOT IN ILLINOIS by Cornell University's Ebird database!
